HVAC Compressor Failure in Your Volvo

Occasionally, your Volvo may experience some problems. It is known for Volvo customers to complain about a failing or failed HVAC compressor. If you are experiencing issues with your car’s AC it can be incredibly frustrating to deal with. No one wants to get in their car on a summer day and not have cool air, or even worse, have no air at all. Luckily, there are some signs to indicate issues with you HVAC compressor.

Once you are able to identify the signs that indicate it is a problem with the HVAC compressor, it will likely be a simple fix for you. However, you should be sure to take your car in for an inspection to make sure that the diagnosis of a failed compressor is indeed the root cause. Having a trusted mechanic that is familiar with working on your make of car is important because they will be able to know what problems are common with your car, and what signs to look for if things are giving you trouble.

Signs of a Faulty HVAC Compressor

There are a few indicators that you are experiencing a failure with your car’s compressor. If your compressor is not turning on at all, that is the most obvious and clear way to identify a compressor issue. When the AC is set to cool, but the temperature is not lowering and you hear the fan, this could be a sign that your compressor is not turning on. If the air conditioning in your car is only blowing warm air no matter what the temperature you have set is, it likely means that the compressor is unable to move refrigerant throughout the system. This means that it will lose its ability to cool your car down. However, it could also indicate the there is a refrigerant leak in your car. Take your vehicle to an expert to have them inspect the issue to determine whether there is a leak or if the compressor is broken.

Some other signs that the compressor in your car is failing is hearing loud sounds when your car’s compressor is turned on and running. Like many other components in your vehicle, the AC compressor uses bearings in order to turn. If any parts begin to wear down or break, you will likely hear loud noises. Since the HVAC system in your car is complicated, it is recommended that you take your car to an expert to have it looked at.

Finally, another indicator of a failing compressor is your clutch won’t move. The compressor has a clutch which is how it engages with the engine. It only allows for the compressor to only work when needed. If it breaks, it can either keep the compressor running non-stop, or it will not turn on at all. In either case, you will want to get this problem resolved so that your AC can function properly.

The HVAC system in your car is essential. It is a frustrating problem to deal with when the system isn’t working properly. In addition, if the HVAC compressor starts to fail, it could mean you are dealing with other issues, and the longer it remains unchecked the more problems it could mean. Having a mechanic you trust to inspect your car is the best course of action because the HVAC is not only complicated, but is also connected to other components in your vehicle.
